Elijah’s Prayer

Background 1 Kings 18

The famine was severe in Samaria three years had passed. God told Elijah to go and see Ahab. Jezebel was killing the Lord’s prophets and Ahab had summoned Obadiah his administrator . They divided the territory to look for grass and water for the animals. Obadiah went in the opposite direction as Ahab and in so doing he met Elijah. Elijah asked him to go and get Ahab. Ahab and Elijah met and Ahab accused Elijah of being a trouble maker, Elijah told him that Ahab and his father’s family had made trouble for Israel. Elijah told him that they had abandoned God’s commands and followed the Baals. Elijah challenged Ahab to bring 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah. They met in Mount Carmel. Elijah said to the people, “How long will you sit on the fence, if God is the real God then follow him; if it’s Baal, follow him.” So Elijah decide to prove that God was God. The stage was set, both brought oxen and wood for the sacrifice, then the call to Baal, more calling and the sacrifice was wasted because Baal does not exist. Elijah’s sacrifice soaked with extra water. The next paragraph is from 1 Kings 18: 36-39

At the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and I have done all these things at Your word. 37“Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that You, O LORD, are God and that You have turned their heart back again.” 38Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The LORD, He is God; the LORD, He is God.”

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe  Hebrews 12:28

God is a god of miracles. I am thankful for how He works in each of our lives. The best news is that just like he invited Elijah to take part in the above miracle, he is at work in our lives and He invites us to take part in his daily plan. Just as Elijah was willing to be humiliated he was willing to serve God and he believed that God could and would show his glory thus he would not be humiliated.

Father God, You are majestic and I am in awe of your majesty. Lord, beyond a shadow of doubt you are God. Help me to recognize any idol in my life, any habit, that is taking me away from your love.

I am thankful for roses, I am thankful for rainbows, I am thankful for raindrops, I am thankful for raisins. I am thankful for rest.

Your turn, I am thankful for………….
