Life and Death

“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.” Deuteronomy 30: 19-20

Beloved, do you have a life verse? I have several. I love this verse for the part of the verse that says, “So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the Lord you God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days that you may live.

How do you choose life in order that you may live? God places a vacuüm in each of our hearts that only he can fill. When we respond and allow him to fill that vacuüm we choose life. We show our love for God by obeying and holding fast to God. For this is your life and the length of your days that you may live.

Death does not scare me because I know where my eternal destination. Jesus shares in John 14: 1-7

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

God ordains the number of days we are to live and Moses says in Psalms 90:12, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” God is at work and he invites us to join him in what he is doing. Yes, there is life and death but in between there is living.

For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.… Romans 14: 7-9
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20
