    Calling

    walking trail 2

Beloved, would you like to go with me on a journey for the month of October? Imagine the sky is crystal blue with brush strokes of peach, pink and white feathery clouds. The artist, our creator, paints a masterpiece in the sky. I love lying down in the deep green grass and letting my imagination run wild as I look at the cumulus clouds and their different shapes.

Can you feel the chill in the air this morning; a hush surrounds the path that leads to the water. Oh, can you hear the whippoorwill, the bees buzzing, and the butterflies as they dance among the yellow wild flowers. Can you hear the insects; a cacophony of crickets and grasshoppers. Look at the hummingbirds circling the beautiful lilies along the path to the water.

The water glistens in the distance as the ducks play with the water fowl, small ripples of water lapping at the shore.  Daily, will you walk with me for the month of October as we  listen to the soft gentle whispers of God wooing each of us in a deeper relationship with Him, a journey to His heart.

    Our Journey Begins

Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. Hebrews 3: 1-4

According to Acts 1:12, one hundred twenty men and women returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, a Sabbath day’s journey. Imagine what they were talking about on this journey. What is their purpose now that Jesus ascended to heaven? When will the Comforter come that Jesus promised?  Jesus had His calling, He fulfilled His purpose as our High Priest. These men and women Jesus looking toward the promise on the day of Pentecost of the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Their walk ends and they gather in the upper room.

What is happening in the upper room? The apostles kneeling  among the men and women, the room filled and one could find all of them praying. What are they praying about? Their world is upside down, they haven’t received the Holy Spirit but they believe Jesus is God’s son and prayer. They kneel asking for the business of the day, safety and who would replace Judas. They have their calling, they are the early church. They cast lots according to tradition and the lot fell to Matthias to fill the place of Judas Iscariot. He became a member of the apostles. Each of us have our calling. Beloved what is yours?

[Tweet “All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. Acts 1:14”]

Father God, I ask for each of us grow closer to you, as we walk on this journey. I know that we never walk alone. I pray James 4: 7-10 that we submit to you, we resist the devil. As we resist the devil that he will flee from us and as we draw near to you, you will draw near to us. Cleanse and purify our hearts and may we serve you with a humble heart. Lift us up Lord.
