The Words I Live By

And What It Means To Me

Finding Grace Within is one of the many blogs that I read and follow. Karen Beth gives a writing prompt each Tuesday at Ten. She allows us a week to complete and she encourages creativity. The words I live by are simple and many of the sayings I have are from my mom.

My mother loved to laugh and had a great sense of humor. We were eating enchiladas one night and she asked, “Are the enchiladas’ hot with hot or hot with heat?” She was always telling me, “Do not put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” “A stitch in time, saves nine.”  Daddy would say, “Honey when you reach forty, I will trade you in for two twenties.” When I married, she gave me wise advice, “Do not let the sun go down when you are angry.”

When I would say I can’t she would say, “You need to try before you say you can’t.”  She would say, “Don’t borrow trouble.”  She would say, “Why are you worrying about this, God has a plan.” Also, have you heard this, “If you can’t say something nice, don”t say anything at all.” She was so wise and always had the right words to say.

Yesterday's the past, tomorrow's the future, but today is a gift. That's why it's called the present. - Bil Keane

So what words do I live by? “This too shall pass”  When things seem overwhelming, I can hear my mom whispering in my ear, “This too shall pass.” I have often used this phrase as a hospital case manager, the person is so sick and with a reassuring voice I say, “This is just a season and this too shall pass.” I may not know the outcome but I know God who does hold the future in his hands.

Another saying, “Pray, pray, pray.” Yes prayer is the answer to my anxiety, my worry and my fears. I love to write my prayers but I have plenty of 911 prayers where I lift my eyes to the heavens and pray, pray, pray.

Another saying comes from Luke 10:27,

And he answered, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”

Leviticus 19:18 “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.”

The saying that I say, “Treat others as you would want treated.”

“Walk in forgiveness and trust and obey.” God does not want us holding grudges and when overwhelmed He wants us to trust Him and obey Him.

When I start my day, I give my day to the Lord, and I ask to be the arms of Jesus. Max Lucado speaks about the heart we need to have and that is the heart of Jesus.

The idea of a spiritual heart transplant is a vivid image to me; once you have the heart of somebody else inside you, then that heart is there. Jesus’ heart is inside me, and my heart is gone. So if God were to place a stethoscope against my chest, he would hear the heart of Jesus Christ beating.

Max Lucado

There is the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me,” This is a lie from Satan so I guard my words. Words can hurt and even if you ask for forgiveness, the words will still replay in the person’s mind. I can still hear something that was not meant to be hateful in 2009. I have forgiven the person and today I am going to let it go and choose to think on the positive things he has said.

As I said my mom instructed me on anger in a marriage from God’s word. Ephesians 4: 25-27

Living as Children of Light
Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another. BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.…

I would like to leave you with this advice. Beloved, you may need to agree to discuss the issue in the morning but going to bed angry allows Satan to give Satan a foothold in your life. You may have been wrong and now pride is in the way as you wait for the other person to apologize. So you are right and the silence is deafening because your mate is a man of few words. Sometimes an apology of overreacting will go along ways to help and apology from your mate. Just remember, anger cause stress and stress causes the release of Cortisol and Cortisol adds belly fat. SO DON’T GO TO BED MAD.  Last saying, “Here is some food for thought”

What are the sayings you live by? Beloved, know you are loved.

Words that I live by are God’s words and His word means the world to me. I could not live a successful life with the influence of God’s word in my life. WK1MV

Your parents were very wise, just as you are in all that you stated above. Thank you for sharing these thought provoking words to live by. I enjoyed reading and pondering over them. You are so right about not going to bed angry … is that why I’m up at 1:36 a.m.? Could be! lol Seriously, we had an issue tonight, and we tried to be careful with our words. But we would not go to bed without trying to talk it through. You are a very wise person, indeed! I would not want my last words to my spouse to be something spoken in anger, and I would not want to “stone wall” and not speak, go to bed, and something happen. Thanks for drilling this home in the best way possible. (PS I don’t want to be angry or stressed … belly fat stay away!!)

Blessed to be your neighbor on Tuesday At Ten this week.
