Psalm Sunday

Psalm 7

The author of this psalm is King David, and it’s written as a prayer and praise for deliverance from enemies. I love the images portrayed in this psalm.

David’s anointed king when he was a young boy in a family of eight boys. His father was Jesse.

1 Samuel 17:12, “David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse, and who had eight sons. And the man was old, advanced in years, in the days of Saul.” David was a shepherd in the field when Samuel comes looking to anoint him king. 1 Samuel 16: 11, Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?’ then he said, “there remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.”

He is all but forgotten by his father in this home of eight boys. Yet, he wasn’t ever forgotten by God. The Lord said in verse 12, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one! Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.”

David’s enemies are many:  Saul and his men, in this Psalm, Cush the Benjamite. The word enemy means one that is antagonistic to another; especially :  one seeking to injure, overthrow, or confound an opponent according to Merriam Webster Dictionary. It could also mean something harmful or deadly alcohol was his greatest enemy.  Personally, I don’t have many enemies that I know of; but I have had days of discontent, and I’ve had people in my life that we’ve chosen to not see one another. However, I’m not immune to this type of problem,  currently I have an enemy. I’ve done what I can to reconcile that relationship as King David did with King Saul. Sometimes we have to move on. I’ve forgiven and accept that I’ve an enemy. Beloved, who’s your enemy? Have you forgiven this person? When we forgive our enemy we let the person off our hook and place them on God’s hook. God is the only fair judge.

Let pray this psalm. Father God, I take refuge in you, please save me from my enemies. If I am the cause of the trouble, please bring to my mind the offense so I may apologize and make amends. Lord, I am choosing to forgive those that have offended me and have hurt my feelings. Lord, bring my enemy to the saving knowledge of you. Send someone in his/her life that will tell him/her the good news. If it is in your will, allow us to reconcile. I give up my right to seek revenge for the harm this person has caused me and I ask that you bless my enemy. Father God, you are my shield, you are God, you are the most High God who saves the upright in heart. You are a righteous judge, you are the only one who can judge my enemies. Lord, I praise you and I thank you for this Psalm and I thank you for the person reading this prayer. I ask you to bless those of us that are struggling with forgiveness of our enemies. I pray this in the blessed name of Jesus. Amen

“I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness;

I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High.” Psalm 7: 17
