Adventures on the dusty road involve surprises

Beloved, our Lord God is everlasting. He is the Creator of the ends of the earth. As we read today in Genesis 19, sin destroys Sodom and Gomorrah.

Word

Beloved our word is fathom. The definition of fathom is understand (a difficult problem or an enigmatic person) after much thought. Fathom is in the Bible two times.

Can you fathom the depths of God or discover the limits of the Almighty? Job 11: 7

My time at my friend was a nice get away. But truly there is no place like home. My personal world was interrupted this week. Not only by this blog disappearing. I have no idea where it went. You see I always read my blog when it is published to see if what I write makes any sense. I had to text my sweet Barbie and have her take it down because it was not complete.

Dusty Road

The dusty road at home is a cold one-we have snow.  A family member is sick. Being separated from your family is difficult at best. It is hard to fathom what to do when someone you love is so far away and prayer is the best and only thing you can do.

The dusty road at work has been difficult. Oftentimes, I grow close to the patient’s family member as the patient may be in the ICU for several weeks. The decisions that loved ones have to make are often hard. This week was filled with loss.

Thoughts

I have kept up on the reading of the Bible and so I will do my best to bring you up to date.

If I had been able to write we would have covered Genesis 17-Genesis 29. This blog was going to just cover Genesis 17-19. According to Dr. Joel, he says if you are behind, do not worry but to just begin afresh with the new reading. So on Monday, we will be reading Genesis 30-33.

There are some difficult things that happen in these chapters. First off, in Genesis 17, God tells Abraham when he was 99 years old–to live in His presence and be blameless. God tells him that Sarai will become Sarah–nations will come from her. Abraham in Genesis 17:17 laughs –this is something new for me. I knew Sarah laughed but maybe it is the version I am reading. Abraham and Ishmael are circumcised–thus in covenant with God.

Genesis 18 The Lord appears to Abraham–Sarah overhears the men and she laughs, then denies that she did, bottom line, is there anything too difficult for God. Then we see Abraham ask God to not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah if there were ten people that were good.

Genesis 19 Sin abounds, Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed, Lot’s life is forever changed. Genesis 20 Abraham lies to a King but nothing will stop God’s plan and God rescues Abraham and Sarah. Genesis 21 Sarah has Isaac and they circumcise him. God let’s Abraham know it is time to say goodbye to Ishmael and Hagar.

In Genesis 22, we see Abraham and his love for God–in obedience he follows God’s command and is willing to sacrifice his one and only son. God provides a sacrifice. In Genesis 23, Abraham says goodbye to Sarah and pays for a cave in the land of Canaan.

Abraham in Genesis 24 sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac. He found Rebekah. Isaac loved Rebekah.

Genesis 25 Abraham marries again and Isaac becomes the father of twins. Genesis 26, The Lord blessed them in the land–they found water in the drought.

Last but not least, the chapters Genesis 27-29, Isaac is old and he is preparing to die, Rebecca favors her son Jacob and Issac favored Esau. Issac’s eyesight is poor. Jacob does what his mother instructs and he receives the birthright blessing. Later he goes to find a wife and is tricked himself.

We’ve read about three generations of whom God made a covenant

  • Abraham and Sarah
  • Isaac and Rebekah
  • Jacob and his wives

God is gracious to answer our prayers. Monday we read Genesis 30-33.

Prayer

Father God, we come to you asking that you heal those that are sick including those in my family. Lord, your word is amazing, life changing and keeps us challenged. Help us to witness your love as we walk on this dusty road. May we always fathom your good deeds, may we be surprised as you answer our prayers.  In Jesus’s name. Amen
