God whispers come to the well.
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. Romans 10:9-10 ESV.
Do you seek people’s approval? I am a reformed people pleaser. However, I am a nice person. I try my best to avoid conflict and I certainly would not want you to be uncomfortable around me.
Today, I would like to explore John 4 with you.
Jesus with his disciples on their way to Galilee. They had to go through Samaria. The Samaritans and the Jewish people were not friends.
The disciples aren’t present they were in search of food. Jesus is at Jacob’s well waiting for them to return.
‘A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.)” John 4:7 ESV.
Minding her own business, she has an encounter with the living God. Jesus wearied from his travel, encounters this soul.
She gazes at this man, Jewish, she knows that Jews and Samaritans are not friends. Jesus must have been compelling for her to speak to Him. She comes to the well in the middle of the day, Perhaps she was an outcast and faced ridicule so the need for amenity.
The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” John 4: 9-12 ESV.
She asks Jesus, “Are you greater than our father Jacob?”
She brings her questions to Jesus.
Jesus goes out of the way, to meet this woman. He meets her on common ground, they both were thirsty. They both needed a drink of water. We need water to live. When did you encounter Jesus?
Jesus says come to the well and I will quench your thirst.
I want you to ponder this first part of the story. A woman with a checkered past stands before a stranger who answers her and relieves her thirst.
God is whispering come to the well.
Father God, I am thirsty. I thirst for you and your word. Thank you for Jesus and he pursues us and alleviates our thirst. We come to the well to be with you today. In Jesus’s name, Amen
