Is God the Lifter of Your Head

Introduction

Have you ever been so heart-broken that you cried out to the Lord? In our Psalm today, King David is reeling from the news of Absalom his son and you can read about Absalom and David in 2 Samuel 13-18.

Often when a crisis arrives, we are so worried and filled with fear, that we bargain with God. We cry out and make promises that we think will help change God’s mind.

Remembering the first fever seizure of my oldest son, he was so little, and to be quite frank it was a scary time and I cried out to the Lord to save him. Or how about the time, my second son walked away from our home and was nowhere to be found. This crisis had me calling 911 and yes pleading with God to help us find our son.

Beloved, when have you cried out to the Lord?

What do I lack?

Scripture

Psalm 3

Thoughts

King David’s son Absalom raped his sister, this is hard to read in the Bible, yet we hear disturbing news daily. How about the family in California that had all the children and were abusing them until one of them fled and used her words to tell on her father and mother.

In Bible Study Fellowship we studied this last year and it seems like King David struggled being a father, holding his kids accountable for their actions. Of course, we all have free will, we have a choice of how we act.

Back to the Psalm, the verses that stood out to me were verses 3-5.

But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.

I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me.

In my journey of reading this Psalm I looked at a few other verses Psalm 5:12, Psalm 28:7, Psalm 9:13, Psalm 27:6, and Psalm 27:1. Each of these verses touched on the Lord being our shield, showing mercy, and lifting or head.

Conclusion

Beloved, God is a shield, God is our glory, and God is the lifter of our head. When we cry out to God He answers according to His will for our lives. My oldest son had many fever related seizures but he finally grew out of them. Our neighbor found my youngest son that day.

I love verse 5 that God gives us rest and He sustains us.

Father God, thank you for your word and that the Bible is relevant today. Thank you that you lift my head and dry my tears. Lord, if there is anyone reading this that is hurting, would you draw them near and become a shield to her and a lifter of her head. Give her courage for the day. In Jesus name, Amen.

What is God asking you to trust him with today?
