Is God Your Portion?

Introduction

Have you ever been to a buffet? One does not have to worry at a buffet of getting a fair portion due to the idea that dishes are made in quantity. But what if you come to the buffet and there is a little amount of a particular dish. Recently, I was in this situation, we went to a Chinese restaurant and the broccoli beef did not have a fair portion.

Psalm 119:57

Scripture

57 You are my portion, Lord;
    I have promised to obey your words.
58 I have sought your face with all my heart;
    be gracious to me according to your promise.
59 I have considered my ways
    and have turned my steps to your statutes.
60 I will hasten and not delay
    to obey your commands.
61 Though the wicked bind me with ropes,
    I will not forget your law.
62 At midnight I rise to give you thanks
    for your righteous laws.
63 I am a friend to all who fear you,
    to all who follow your precepts.
64 The earth is filled with your love, Lord;
    teach me your decrees.

Hence

I waited for the cook to bring more broccoli beef but in the meantime, I filled my plate with other choices. In these verses, the Psalmist declares his obedience to the Lord. If you will, the Lord is enough. The Psalmist does not need anything other than the Lord.

The Lord is my portion. You are the most important person. Yes, Lord, you are my portion.

The Psalmist details the importance of God’s word. He promises to seek God daily. The word of God is a double-edged sword as we read in Hebrews.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12.

God’s word judges our actions. Such conviction brings repentance. Several ways to study God’s word from just reading it to a formal reading plan, being in God’s word needs to be a priority.

If one wants to just read the Bible, starting in the book of John is an excellent idea. One can meditate on a verse, praying God’s word back to Him is purposeful.

Lastly, many Bibles have reading plans and there are Bibles such as the One Year Bible or the Chronological Bible where you have a certain passage to read per day and you read a certain amount of scripture per day.

God’s word sustains us, protects us and ensures us peace and protection. Look at verse 61,

Though the wicked bind me with ropes,
I will not forget your law.

Beloved, do not forget God’s love, verse 64.

The earth is filled with your love, Lord;
    teach me your decrees.

Lastly,

Beloved, God just desires a relationship with you. Will, you read His word today?

Father God, fill me with the desire to be in Your word. Help me to read, know and share God’s word. In Jesus’ name, Amen

What is God calling you to do today in response to this blog?
