Five Minute Fridays

Stuck Like Gum

Five Minute Friday, a time to write for five minutes on a word and then link with other writers. The word is stuck.

I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O LORD, put me not to shame. Psalm 119:31

My little West Highland Terrier named Tory knows all about the word stuck. She sticks her nose to the ground just sure she will find a rabbit, a squirrel, or something good to eat. Since we live in Ramona, California in an RV resort park that is in a rural area, we decided to have her trained to smell the danger of a rattlesnake. The training was with live rattlesnakes that were muzzled. I know how do you muzzle a rattlesnake. The lady said very carefully. Of course, there is a shock collar, and when Tory stuck her nose where it did not belong, the trainer sent a shock. When she was through the course and would meet the adult snake, she was very smart and didn’t want to stick her nose anywhere near that snake.

As I watched her be trained, I thought about sin, sin is enticing at times. Gossip, jealousy, laziness are some of the habitual sins that lurk to snare us. What do I need to be stuck on so that I do not participate in gossiping or being consumed with comparison and jealousy or not being active? I need to be stuck like gum on a shoe in God’s word. Daily I need to memorize, read, and claim God’s word just like the Psalmist did in the Old Testament.  Then I need to pray and let go of the temptation to sin. Just like Tory did when she came to the last test, the adult snake, she wanted to run to us and have nothing to do with that snake.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, andHe will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning, and your joy to gloom.…James 4: 7-9

Will you run to God and have nothing to do with sin? Will God find you faithful and stuck in His word upon His return?
