The Floating Zoo

Our Bible Hero is Noah.

Our word today is Community. The word community is defined as a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. Community, the word is not in the Bible but we know there were communities in Biblical times. God gave the command from to go forth and multiply. This command was given to Adam and Noah.

Scripture

Read with me this verse on community in Hebrews 10: 24-25.

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

We are made for community.

Thoughts

We see the community that Noah is living in, it is corrupt. So corrupt that God has Noah build an ark, and precedes to destroy the world with a flood. Although he promises to never destroy the world by a flood, we see corruption in our world today.

Remember the word number yesterday, well it rained for forty days, some of the animals went into the ark, two by two, but there are other numbers involved with this story. Do you have a favorite number?

Noah and his family were on the boat longer than the forty days and nights.

Read with me the details in Genesis 7.

Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. Genesis 7: 2-4.

They had to have animals to keep other animals alive. The bottom line is God had it figured out. Because of Noah’s righteousness, he and his family were saved.

This floating zoo survived this catastrophic event. The waters prevailed 150 days and we read this at the end of Genesis 7.

Finally, they could exit the ark and Noah builds an altar to thank God. God is pleased with the actions and He makes a covenant with Noah, that He would never destroy the earth with a flood again. He gives them a sign of this promise, a rainbow. God wanted Noah to bring forth the animals and his family and for them to populate the world. The same command God had given Adam.

Lessons Learned

Beloved Noah walked with God, he listened to God. There is a difference between just living and walking with God. Noah is credited with righteousness.

There is his one weakness and he plants a vineyard and then he has too much to drink. This leads to sin in his family. But just like David, God forgives Noah. You can read this event in Genesis 9.

The lessons here is sometimes we can have too much of a good thing and we pay the consequences of our choices.

I had a time in my life where I backed away from going to church and serving God and the consequences from that choice is that not all of my family go to church now.

Conclusion

If we remember our word is community. We need each other and we need to remember that Noah is in the hall of faith in Hebrews 11 because of his righteousness. We can be right before the Lord. If we confess our sins he will forgive us all unrighteousness read with me the verse in 1 John 1:9

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

Father God, forgive me for not always being in tune with you. Help me to focus on my walking with you. In Jesus name, Amen.

What might you need to ask God for forgiveness of sin?

God shares His righteousness with us, what do you need to do to be righteous before God?
