Adventures on the dusty road sometimes involves grief and tragedy

Beloved, the dusty road is full of ice. Yikes, for me it meant a snow day. I was unable to go to work, but by the time you read this, hopefully, I will be back to work.

Verse

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” Psalm 5:3

Word

Sweet Friend, our word is hear–to perceive with the ear the sound made by (someone or something). The word hear is in the Bible 1,642 times. So the word hear is a very popular word. We see it in Genesis when God talks to Adam, but my favorite is in John 10: 27

My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.”

God tells us to come to Him and He will give us rest. To ask and it will be given as reflected in Matthew 7: 7-8

“Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Thoughts

Our reading in the Chronological Bible is Job 1-5. Job a man of high regard. He was loved by God and he loved God.

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity, who fears God and turns away from evil.” Job 1: 8

In Job 1, Job loss is monumental yet we read–“Throughout all this Job did not sin or blame God for anything.[d]

Sweet friends, I’ve never considered the wife’s response in Job 2, she wants Job to curse God. He doesn’t but she is so fortunate that she doesn’t turn into a pillar of salt like Lot’s wife. And we are introduced to his three friends. In the beginning.these friends are quiet–no one spoke a word to him because they saw that his suffering was very intense.

Job 3, Job begins to curse the day he was born, do you bring your whys to God?

Job 4-5 are the beginning of the speeches from the first friend, and we read this question in Job 5:1

Call out! Will anyone answer you?
Which of the holy ones will you turn to?

The friend is ill-advised–we know that God is there. God never leaves us or forsakes us.

The trouble so far

  • Job loses his livestock
  • Job loses his children
  • Job’s wife is not helpful
  • Job’s friend weighs in on the tragedy
  • Job does not blame God.

Our reading for tomorrow is in Job 6-9.

Beloved, are you struggling? Do you have an estranged older child? Are you suffering with an illness? Did your husband betray your trust?

Prayer

Father God,

We trust you with our hurts. In the midst of his pain, Job never curses you, may we learn that we live in a fallen world and You are good and worthy of our love and praise. Today, I prayed for my friend’s son who fell on because of the ice, I pray for the healing of his ribs and for him to get a good night’s rest.  Lord God, the book of Job is a difficult one for me to understand, but I am in awe of your word. I ask that as we read it I honor you with my interpretation. Please protect us on this icy dusty road.  In Jesus’s name, amen
