Jonah, Week 2, Day 3

Introduction

Beloved, do you believe God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and always present?  Thankfully in Chapter 2 of Jonah, God knows where Jonah is, he is in the belly of the fish, he has messed up, he ran away from God, thinking he could hide. Adam and Eve thought they could hide from God after they sinned. Psalm 139 says search me, O God. Beloved, God knows us and loves us, even when we sin.

Jonah, Week 2, Day 3

Reading and Assignment

Jonah 2: 5-7, SOAP Jonah 2: 6

Scripture

I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God. Jonah 2: 6.

Observation

God knows our every move and thought. When Jonah was at his lowest, God, knew where he was and God redeems him.

Application

What corruption is there in your life? Do you struggle with sharing your faith? Do you struggle with procrastination? Do you turn to the world for comfort before turning to God? God asked Jonah to deliver a message to an unbelieving city. Who is God asking you to share your faith?

Prayer

Father God, You love us when we are corrupt, You see our hearts. Your word says You look at the heart of man. You direct our steps and You embrace us even when we are stinky with fish guts all over us. Thank You that You forgive me and purify me of all unrighteousness. I confess to not always putting you first. I confess to procrastination when it comes to what you ask me to do. Lord, I ask that I put You first and seek you first. In Jesus name, Amen.

Conclusion

In the blog at Love God Greatly the author writes that God drastically deals with us three reasons, we are stubborn, we cultivate sin, and we ignore our sins. When I ran from God and made my mistakes, I have to say that all three things were true for me. However, when God got my attention, and I returned to my first love which is God, I have never allowed myself to be so lost again. Beloved, let us not be complacent and sinful. Let us be loving and willing to share the reason for our hope.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18

I did a whole week of devotions on Jonah in my book, A Pruned Branch. O! the things we can learn from the smelly belly of a fish!
