Jonah, Week 1, Day 1

Introduction

Jonah is the name of the book and Jonah means dove. According to John McArthur, Jonah wrote this book, he writes in the third person. According to 2 Kin. 14:25, Jonah came from Gath-hepher near Nazareth. Jonah is a prophet to the Northern Kingdom just prior to Amos. This is a time of peace for the Northern Kingdom. Jonah has been given a job to do. Spiritually it is a time of poverty for Ninevah. Have you gone through a time of spiritual poverty?

Reading and Assignment

Jonah 1:1-3, Psalm 139: 7-10, SOAP Psalm 139: 7-10

Scripture

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

Application

Do you believe that wherever you are, God is there? God is everywhere present, this means he is omnipresent. He is all-knowing, omniscient. and He is all-powerful, omnipotent. Do you take your jobs from God seriously?

Prayer

Father God, you are the alpha, the omega, the beginning and the end. We cannot hide from you. Just as you were in the Garden when Adam and Eve hid, you know everything we are thinking and everything we are doing. You are at work around us and you invite us to join you in your work. Thank you that we are all given a job to do. Help us, Lord, to be who you want us to be. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Conclusion

We all have a place in God’s kingdom, we all have a God-shaped vacuum that only God can fill. We are all striving to be accepted, significant, and approved. Beloved, only God can fill this vacuum.
